"There is not much text on Friendship Day history as we celebrate today. However, there are numerous folktales and several instance in mythological myths that shows that friends and friendship have been valued since the beginning of civilized world. As an intrinsically social being, men love to make friends to further this procedure of socialization.

Considering the precious role friends play in our life it was deemed to fit to have a day dedicated to friends and friendship. The United States Congress, in 1935, yproclaim first Sunday of August as the National Friendship Day. Since then, festivity of National Friendship Day became an annual event. The noble idea of honoring the beautiful relationship of friendship wedged on with the people and soon Friendship Day became a enormously popular festival.

Following the fame and success of Friendship Day in US, several other countries adopted the tradition of dedicating a day to friends. Today, Friendship Day is excitedly celebrated by several countries across the world including India.

In 1997, the United Nations named Winnie - the Pooh as the world's Ambassador of Friendship.

The Bible, the primary text of the western people, reflects upon friendship as the bond that forms the foundation to human faith, trust and companionship. Following verses from the bible aptly depict the importance of friends:

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

“Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Besides, there are more than a few tales from the Old Testament and the New Testament about the value of friendship and how true friendship is a money to unearth. A noticeable point is that, both the versions make a difference between the two broad meanings of friendship- one is a mere acquaintance, the other is a more loving relation.

In the Old Testament, Abraham is called the “friend of God” because of the intimacy of his relations. God speaks to Moses face to face “as a man…unto his friend” (Ex 33:11). The idealistic friendship of Ruth and Naomi, the devotion of the subordinate Hushai for David, or the mutual relation between David and Jonathan - the Old Testament is sated with these interesting tales of friends and friendship.

In the New Testament, the relationship between Jesus and his disciples clearly depicts how human friendship can continually grow. From being teacher and disciple, to lord and servant their relationship finally grew to an supreme friendship.

In the famous Hindu epic ‘Mahabharata’, Lord Krishna demonstrates the a lot of colors of friendship - affection, romance, brotherhood, protection, leadership, intimacy and even teasing. Friendship is all about these and much more."

America's National Independence Day Parade takes place yearly on July 4th at 11:45 am in Washington, D.C., on Constitution Avenue from 7th to 17th Street before a street audience of hundreds of thousands of audience. The Parade consists of invited bands, fife and drum corps, floats, military and area of expertise units, giant balloons, equestrian, drill teams, VIP's, national dignitaries, and celebrity participant. The Parade is a major national event which seeks to draw the notice of Americans to the real meaning for the holiday. It is a patriotic, flag-waving, red white and blue festivity of America's birthday!

The Parade is co-hosted by the National Park Service and shaped by Diversified Events, which is under contract to the National Park Service.

Participating bands are invited based on recommendation from each state's Governor's office. Other times these recommendations come from a state's music educator’s office or other music education organizations at the governor's ask for.

Representation from all parts of the United States is the objective of the Parade National Selection Committee. Bands must present a video recording, photos, and biographical information detailing experience, honor, past adjudication results, festival ratings, etc. The limit for band applications is January 15th of the year of the parade the band is applies to participate in, and bands are notified of their acceptance no later than February 15th of the same year. Marching bands are chosen on the basis of overall quality, as well as geographical, ethnic and stylistic variety. It is the annual goal of the parade organizers to have at least one band or unit stand for each of the 50 states of the union.

The Nation's Capital offers unlimited enthusiasm on July 4th in addition to the parade. A National Folk life Festival on the Mall features dissimilar cultures in the Americas and a variety of ethnic groups. That evening, parade participants are all part of the spectators of the PBS Concert at the Capitol Building feature the National Symphony Orchestra and one of the country's largest fireworks displays. There is no greater location displaying greater enthusiasm on America's birthday than in our nation's capital.

Father's Day History

The father's day history is very simple.

Sonora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.

Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state.

After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally made it permanent in 1972.
